Groundhog Day Redux

Winnipeg's wee-Hughie came out of his hole today.

He's been so invisible, we were starting to wonder if he done croaked or somepin.

What we were really wondering though is how did he manage to take time away from gnawing on the cardboard shoulder pads of Heather Stefanson's sexy white pantsuit to burrow into the allegedly shady business deals of the WRHA?

Who knows. But here are some interesting facts about the noble land beaver:
  • They are the most solitary of the marmots
  • They are one of the few species that enter into true hibernation
  • They pose a serious threat to development by undermining [the] building [of] foundations
  • They prefer to retreat to their burrows when threatened
  • When alarmed, they use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the group
  • Experts on: "They’re known for their aggression [with] a natural impulse to kill ’em all and let God sort ’em out. You have to work to produce the sweet and cuddly."
Whizzing wee-Hughie may get some traction on this whole WRHA thing - certainly the usual suspects among the local bloggerati have glommed onto it (even though it's probably a tempest in a teapot) - but a more likely result is that Hugh saw nothing but his pathetic shadow and it's six (at least) more years of Doer.

Coming next: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck...

  1. If hughie can't make this stick, its time for him to collect his pension.

  2. @Nobody: I'll take that bet.

I'm not convinced this story has legs. It will be interesting to see how the media treat it. Surely they are disposed to help poor Hughie out.

But there's both a lot less and a lot more to this story than meets the eye. That's all I will say for now.

p.s. my apologies for our previous getting off on the wrong foot.

  3. Vic Grant.

    Godammned Vic fucking Grant.

Who could have ever figured he'd get it right.

But, here's his take on it:

    From todays, "Excuse Me"
Too much ado over common business practice if you ask me.

This value added hey rube amounts to a tempest in a teapot and it’s bordering on getting stupid questioning an accepted practice which in the case of the Winnipeg Regional health Authority goes right to the bottom line.

That saves you and I, the taxpayers, money not to mention adding greater value to our health system which requires all the help it can get.

Throughout the passage of time, value added has been common business practice from hookers to kings through time. It’s a sound business practice when one offers either a thank you or something of a reward for doing good business.

Only perception comes into question here and looking at the WRHSA inside out and outside in there is nothing to suggest the whole process is anything other than squeaky clean.

No one has convinced me there’s anything wrong with a winning bid having a separate unopened envelope attached containing paperwork promising to enhance our health care system.

Typically, the wanna be politicians start the campaign of rumor and innuendo citing potential corruption to the whole process. Understand wanna be politicians always look to the downside before seeing the upside.

It’s heading toward silliness when the rules and regulations spell out that a sales call cannot include a box of Tim Horton donuts, or stopping by at the end of the work day with a Boston pizza.

Anything of added value given at the completion of the tendering process can do nothing but enhance the end result, in this specific case being our beleaguered health care system.

Rest easy, folks, there is no evidence of corruption, no one at WRHA is pocketing envelopes containing gobs of cash, and the only benefactor is the system.

The WRHA may be top heavy with administrators and some of them may in fact be overpaid, but bottom line here, $20 million dollars for health care in any way, shape, or form, is a good thing. If someone gets a free pizza out of it then so be it.

I’ve got a better question to be asked and answered:

I’m told Canada is ranked number one in the world for health care spending.

Then why is Canada ranked 13th in the world when it comes to accessing that health care system?

    Now that’s a disparity.

  4. No probs SA.

This story only has legs if a Public Tender was awarded knowing in advance, what was in the envelope.

Kinda like, give me the job and I have a set of car keys for you.

And Vic, its the principle. DO you really think a corrupt Bidding process is saving you money. That 20 million is paid back in spades, there is part of your answer on being Number 1 in health care spending.

  5. @Brian: thanks so much for bringing to our attention the disturbing news that Vic Grant and Smart Arse think alike ("tempest in a teapot" -are you fucking kidding me!)

Vic is right when he says: "value added has been common business practice from hookers to kings through time" and "the only benefactor is the system." He might have added that $20M over 8 years is about 1% of the *annual* WRHA budget. In other words, puny. So people like Hughie should keep it a bit more real.

I hope Hughie as well as Vic's colleagues in MSM were paying attention. I don't know how much misplaced faux moral outrage I can take.

Note: Vic is not right about Canada ranking 1st in spending but that's a topic for another day.

  6. "I’m told Canada is ranked number one in the world for health care spending."

We spend the most but we sure don't get the best results....we are far from the best health care system in the world. Not everyone can be #1 but we can do better.

  7. Again, not true Cotton. We are like 8th or 9th as per this OECD data (it's a few years old but it hasn't changed much - or so "I'm told"):
    http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/29/52/36960035.pdf

This myth permeates the entire debate about health care in Canada which is unfair, because it is simply untrue. If you have information to the contrary to share with us, we'd be happy to read it.

We don't disagree that we can do better
